BOONVILLE - As students made their way back to Boonville High School for their first day of classes, they found a few things had changed while they were away.
Construction has taken over some parts of the school, and has students and staff excited about the new additions.
"We were in the gym and I told them, hey guys this is done, this is done, this is done. The doors are open, we don't have to walk around. And there was just a huge eruption," said Boonville High School Principal Jay Webster.
The project started back in March and will add six additional classrooms, an expanded weight room and a new courtyard.
Spring rains slowed construction for some time, but officials say the workers have quickened their pace to make sure the project is completed on schedule.
"Septagon Construction is the construction manager. They do a fantastic job," said Mark Ficken, Boonville schools' superintendent. "They're on time, they meet deadlines, and they're under budget, so its a very exciting time for Boonville High School."
However, officials are concerned with dust that has collected throughout the school as a result of the construction. Webster said nearly half an inch has collected in some areas.
But as the dust settles, the school's custodial staff is working with construction workers to remove it.
Students are also taking an active role in the school's expansion and growth, as construction continues through the end of September.
"Our student council kids will come out dusting rooms , cleaning things that we weren't able to get done normally, our students did," Webster said. "And they are just really really excited about it just like the rest of us."
