COLUMBIA - MU radio station KCOU needs funding and student leaders are worried it won't get it.

Campus radio station KCOU won't hesitate to play a request, except now the station has a request of its own and it's not an old rock song. The station is requesting $30,000 from the Missouri Students Association. Without it, the fate of the station on the air is up in the air.

"The conflict with MSA is they don't want to hand over the funds just yet for the new transmitter and tower for us to move to the Schurz roof because they're renovating Hudson Hall," KCOU Assistant General Manager Joe Fessehaye said.

The current KCOU tower sits on top of Hudson.

"When that hall closes down the current tower that KCOU broadcasts out of will essentially be rendered inactive," MSA Senator Josh Travis said. "In my talks with the director of residential life, he told me we needed a decision on whichever way we we're going to go by mid to late October."

Fessehaye said not all hope is lost though.

"We actually worked together, and we have a bill that we're working on finalizing to push to the MSA Senate floor," Fessehaye said.

The proposed bill gives KCOU $30,000 to purchase a new tower and place it on top of Schurz Hall.  It also requires KCOU to raise five percent of its budget, and it requires KCOU to present a business plan every year.

Both MSA and the station hope to have a resolution by Oct. 15, when the bill is set for a vote.
