COLUMBIA - It's the day after Thanksgiving, and only the dedicated few are back in the gym.

More people will join them in the coming weeks though as holiday dinners and treats pack on the fat. People usually put on a little extra weight over the holidays, the average is about three to five pounds. But many are turning to another fat loss method to either supplement or replace exercise. These are the over the counter thermogenic weight loss supplements found in most health and drug stores. These supplements burn fat by raising a user's core body temperature and metabolism. Traditionally used by fitness enthusiasts, GNC manager Mark Adamson says regular men and women now buy the weight-loss aids.

"Oprah just did a special on the acai berry, so I've just had flocks of women coming in. I can't keep it on the shelf," GNC manager Mark Adamson said.

The fact that the FDA doesn't regulate these drugs and they don't list all their ingredients raises concern with those in the fitness field.

"Before taking any supplement make sure you know what it is doing to your body. And don't just jump with blind faith and hope that you lose weight because you may compromise your health," personal trainer Chris Hardy said.

Hardy says that, in the end, it's a matter of fewer calories in, more calories out.
