CALIFORNIA - Moniteau County celebrates its 143rd consecutive county fair this week with fun and future farmers.

Tuesday, kids of all ages from Moniteau's 4-H and FFA clubs showed steers and other livestock they've raised for the past year.  They also competed in a pasture pageant and livestock auction.

9 year-old Cole Schlup of California showed his prize-winning steer, Bob.  Schlup raised Bob with the help of uncle who teaches agriculture.  He plans to sell the 1200-pound steer for around $1500 and set the profits aside for a scholarship fund.  Schlup says he'd also like to donate the meat from Bob to the mid-Missouri Samaritan Center.

This marks the twenty fourth year the Schlup family entered the juniors livestock auction.  The family is extremely proud of its tradition and plans to keep it going with Cole and future generations.

Fair organizers say Thursday and Friday will be popular nights.  On Thursday, clunkers will compete in a demolition derby.  Then trucks will race in the annual Figure 8 Race on Friday evening.

Update: Judges awarded Cole Schlup's steer the title of home grown champion.
