COLUMBIA - Residents in Columbia neighborhoods participated in the 26th annual National Night Out.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and to strengthen relationships in the neighborhood as well as the police community.

"Ultimate purpose of it is to get to know not only your neighborhoods but also get to know your emergency respondent in your area," said Mike Hayes, Columbia Police Officer.

Police were not the only one who joined this event. Firefighters also joined in to get to know the neighborhood better.

"Community involvement and the understanding of what we do day and day out is very important," said Jeff Strewn, "It is also important to know the neighborhoods and make them feel more comfortable to talk to the officers."

Residents also agree on that.

"It's always good to meet your public servants," said James Downey. "I met several law enforcement today, it was good to meet them here."

National Night Out could have the added impact of sending a message to criminals that the neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

"I have been to National Night Out event several times. I hope this event will help our partnerships in our fight for a safer nation," said Gene Gerke.

In all, more than 37 million Americans took part in last year National Night Out.
