COLUMBIA - Judge Gary Oxenhandler recused himself from the re-trial of former Columbia Police officer Steven Rios on Thursday.

Oxenhandler apparently knows someone who will be a witness in the case.

The re-trial was set to begin on Aug. 18, but a new judge could mean a delay in the case.

A jury convicted Rios in the killing of 23-year-old MU student Jessica Valencia in 2005. An appellate court threw out that verdict, saying it was based on improper hearsay statements.
