CARUTHERSVILLE- Once again, the Humane Society of Missouri is rescuing dogs and cats from the flood-prone Caruthersville area of Southeast Missouri. The Mississippi River is expected to crest about eight feet above flood stage there on Friday. For the second time in three days, dogs and cats had to be removed from the Caruthersville Humane Society. In all 48 dogs, 16 of them puppies, and 18 cats were removed from the shelter. Humane society officials say that in many cases, owners gave up the pets because of the flood threat. The animals will be housed in St. Louis and put up for adoption.
