COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- A Columbia animal shelter has won a nationwide contest that will give it a makeover with goods and services worth up to $1 million. A pair of seventh-graders at Columbia Catholic School got the Central Missouri Humane Society shelter into the contest in January, though it started in September. Despite the late start, the campaign quickly gained the backing of the community. The makeover contest is promoted by the Web site zootoo.com, owned by former Meow Mix CEO Richard Thompson. Zootoo.com ran into controversy earlier this month when a St. Louis shelter that won the contest last year complained that it hadn't received any money -- only pressure from Thompson to ask vendors to donate their goods and services for the makeover. The Web site and St. Louis shelter reached a legal settlement last week.
