LEONARD - The international outbreak of swine flu has caused an increase in business for Missouri pig farmers.

Leonard, Mo., is home to 66 people...and numerous pigs.

Those pigs might not know what the disease influenza is, but their owners and pig farmers sure do.

Fifth-generation farmer Matt Beach said, "If the swine flu stays in the media there could be some lasting effects that would hit us more than just short term."

Tim Gibbons at Patchwork Family Farms said sales actually spiked Monday for the first time in months. He thinks this is due to Missourians' confidence in local farmers growing their meat.

"Coming from a local family farm, most of the customers and consumers know where it's coming from, so they're not concerned about the safety of the product," Beach said.

The Missouri Department of Agriculture said, "...you cannot get swine flu from eating pork or pork products...swine flu viruses are not transmitted by food."

"Consumer confidence, they have to believe what they're eating," said Beach.

There are no cases of swine in the United States affected by the disease, according to the Department of Agriculture.

"However long it takes to get the swine flu figured out and get the consumer confidence back into our pork products," said Beach.

There have been no cases of swine flu reported in Missouri, but it is important to know that Missouri officials claim to have supplies to treat more than 600,000 cases of swine flu in case an outbreak should occur in the state.
