COLUMBIA - Imagine taking a shower and having the water shut off unexpectedly, or checking your bill to find it much higher than last month's.
Some local residents have been dealing with just that for years. Most of us never think about where the water comes from or where the sewage goes, but some Columbians have been dealing with inconsistent service and sky high bills.
The Missouri Public Services Commission accuses Universal Utilities Incorporated of illegally providing water and sewer service to the Blue Acres Mobile Home Park. The company operates without permission from the Public Service Commission, which sets rates and rules. This means Universal has been setting its own rules and rates.
Some residents say they've felt them hard.
"From the beginning, it's always been outrageous. I looked at my first water bill and I'm like, 'Oh my gosh!'," said Blue Acres resident Michele Owen.
Water meters show how much water residents of Blue Acres are using, but some residents say it also shows how much money they're losing. Even with the higher costs, water service for the 114 families has been bad.
"All the time. It's shut off all the time sometimes, and you don't even know when the water's going to be on because it will be just shut off for no reason, I don't know what is up with it," Owen said.
The Missouri Public Service Commission held a public hearing so residents can let it know what's been going on.
"This is an informational hearing. We want the comments of the people, what charges they've been subjected to, what extra fees," Public Councilwoman Chrisitina Baker said.
Once the commission has that information, it'll find out what needs to be done. Interestingly enough, Universal Utilities Incorporated operates out of Michigan. The Public Health Commission says Universal services several other trailer parks, and they're looking into them as well.
Officials say, even after Monday night's hearing, nothing will happen for at least a few months, so those frustrated residents will just have to wait for the decision.
