JEFFERSON CITY- Mo-DOT is down to one of its last new construction projects for the state's five-year transportation improvement program.
Highway 50 in Osage County is now in the state's five-year transportation plan for 2009-2013. The Missouri Department of Transportation says with this project included, funding levels will drop because Amendment 3 bonds will be gone.
"Back in 2004 when the legislature passed amendment three, they required for Mo-DOT to use this amendment three funds. We had to actually sell bonds or basically take out loans to use this money. Well, starting in 2010 we have to start paying those funds back," explained District Five planning manager, Mike Dusenberg.
With a big portion of this amendment three money going back to paying those bonds, there will not be enough money for additional projects. This will be the last project for the program.About 6.6 miles of Route 50 between Jefferson City and Linn will change from a two lane highway to a four lane divide with a grass median.
Dusenberg says even with the change in funding the five-year program will not stop. It will just change the type of programs. There are five other projects using the amendment 3 bonds including Route 5 in Camden County, Route 54 in Camden and Miller counties and Route 50 in Moniteau County.
