COLUMBIA - A sluggish economy could affect some post-college job searches.

In Columbia and around the country, college graduates are walking across the stage this weekend.

A recent rise in unemployment, at 5 percent in April, may cause problems for job hunters. In a survey done by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, 40 percent of responding companies said they're changing their hiring plans in response to economic conditions.

"They're not sure as the economy continues to tighten how that's going to affect recruiting," said Amanda Nell, a Coordinator of Student Employment.

This could mean fewer jobs out there and more people snapping them up quickly. Career services has been telling students to start early finding a job.

Mizzou will hand out over five thousand degrees this semester as students graduate in places like Jesse Hall and Mizzou Arena. That's a big number of students job searching, but not all of them will have trouble. Jobs in education, health care, business, computers and engineering are still out there.

Engineering graduate Chris Van Horn has a job, but he knows friends who don't.

"There is still people out there looking for jobs as they're graduating," said Van Horn. "It makes it a lot harder once you graduate."

To make it easier, graduates should create a target list focus on it. Contact a posible employer every day and search through family, friends, and old employers - don't just rely on the Internet. Finally, tailor resumes to feature applicable skills.

Experts say job seekers should pay attention to the current economic conditions and keep up to date with changes as they continue their searches.
