According to the New York Times, Twitter could unveil a new tool next week called "Geolocation."

Using GPS on cell phones, it allows users to search for tweets within a specific location. While the Geolocation Twitter tool could be beneficial for users, it might also have applications for journalists as well.

"This could be a really helpful tool for journalists because during breaking news or information coming out on Twitter, if we can locate where someone is tweeting from, we can do better in identifying someone who we may have never interacted with before," KOMU New Media Director Jen Reeves said. "It gives a little more legitamacy behind those messages that are being sent. Obviously, anything that's on Twitter has to be confirmed before it's on air or online anyways, but it just gives a little more legitamacy to somebody else's information."
