JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri Supreme Court is granting former Columbia police officer Steven Rios a new murder trial.

The court denied a request to reconsider Steven Rios' overturned murder conviction. Since May there has been a push to grant Steven Rios a new trial.

A jury found Rios guilty of murdering Jesse Valencia in May of 2005.

During the first trial, Rios admitted to having a secret homosexual affair with Valencia, a University of Missouri student. An appellate court overturned Rios' murder conviction in April because two hearsay statements were accepted in trial.

State prosecutor Morley Swingle says the state will try Rios for murder in Boone County again.  The trial could begin in early 2008.
