COLUMBIA - Fireworks go on sale Saturday, and safety is always is a concern during the Fourth of July season.

The big tents are up and fireworks are about to fly off the shelves.  But fireworks salespeople and the Columbia Fire Department alike want everyone to remember some regulations and safety tips for the fun firework season.

If you live within the city limits it is illegal to discharge fireworks, and you are subject to a summons if you are seen discharging fireworks," Captain Eric Hartman of the Columbia Fire Department said.

Hartman said if you want to shoot off fireworks you can go to unincorporated areas and outside city limits.

And keep in mind the following safety tips:

- Fireworks should only be discharged by adults.
- Always wear eye protection when shooting off fireworks.
- Never hold bottle rockets, flares or other like fireworks in your hands.
- Always make sure people are clear of the are when you are shooting off fireworks.
- If you allow children to handle sparklers, always warn them to not touch the tip or get close to other people. The sparkler burns up to 1200 degrees and will cause serious burns. Make sure to place the sparkler in a bucket of water when it has burned out.
- Always call 911 immediately if a fire or personal injury occurs.
- Always have a garden hose, portable extinguisher or buckets of water close should fireworks ignite grass, leaves or fall on buildings.
- Remember to STOP, DROP, and ROLL if you should catch on fire.

Bob Gerau of Bob's Fireworks believes that if you are safe with fireworks, the holiday will be full of fun.

"There's danger in everything," Gerau said. "They demand your attention. You have to have the common sense and supervision with parents. But what can you do in live that doesn't pose a risk?"

Gerau continued to say, "There is a risk factor involved. If you don't like fireworks don't shoot them, don't get involved with them. Go in the house and watch a golf program."
