AUXVASSE - One young Auxvasse girl takes her passion to the professional level.
Ashley Durr has a two big passions: a love for horses and a love for football. KOMU updates her story we first told you about seven years ago.
As the story goes, a North Callaway student ruffled a few feathers on her way to playing junior high football. Back in 2001, Ashley Durr loved riding horses and tackling boys.
"I got called names. I wouldn't call it pressure, but there were a lot of people that didn't want me playing," Ashley Durr said. "There were others that loved that I was playing."
And guess what? She's still playing as a professional!
The 18-year-old from Auxvasse just made the St. Louis Slam roster.
"I went out there and gave it my best shot," Ashley said.
She's the youngest player on the team.
"I think they were surprised as big as I am how fast I am that surprised not only the coaches but also the other girls," Ashley said.
Playing with girls today, but seven years ago it was a different story, Mom remembers.
"There were some boys she had to set straight and even some men didn't like a girl being on the team," said Marsha Durr, Ashley's mom.
Ashley's dad set some rules for her tryouts.
"The rules are if you tryout for the team and make it you stay on the team that season," said Allen Durr, Ashley's dad. "If you don't want to go back, don't tryout and you have to keep your grades up, grades come first."
Other than football, Ashley also holds a passion for horses. But which one tops the list?
"At this point I couldn't tell you," Ashley said. "It's going to take one of two years to see."
Ashley is going to school in St. Charles County where she's learning to be a veterinarian tech. She loads UPS trucks at night and plays professional football. The football season begins in April with eight games.
