Fulton - Three mid-Missouri newspapers will have a new owner come next month. WEHCO Media Inc. of Arkansas bought the Jefferson City News Tribune, Fulton Sun, and California Democrat.

It was a quiet morning at the Fulton Sun even after finding out the paper was sold the day before.

The Weldon family of Jefferson City currently owns the Sun along with the Jefferson City and California papers. Three siblings inherited the papers after their mother Betty Weldon died last year.

One sister, Toni Weldon, wanted to run the papers herself. She says she was waiting for financing when her siblings made the deal with WEHCO president Walter Hussman.

No one at the News Tribune or at the Sun would go on camera for an interview. The other two owners also declined to comment. Hussman says he's excited to sell papers in mid-Missouri.

"We were impressed with the people we met at the newspaper and the management," said Hussman. "We felt like they were a good fit with us as far as having similar types of values to what we have."

Fulton Sun readers have yet to decide if this change will be good or bad for the paper.

"I like basically all of it the way it is. I don't know if it will continue to be that way when the new ownership takes over, but I hope it will," said Jim Charlton a Fulton Sun reader.

Hussman says he anticipates the papers will stay true to themselves. He says one change readers can expect is more editorials. Hussman says his company will close the deal on April 30.
