JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - Missouri lawmakers have passed a bill that puts restrictions on illegal immigrants. The bill includes a requirement that people prove they are U.S. citizens or legally in the country when applying for food stamps and other public benefits. It also penalizes businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants and bars cities from refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. The measure also allows fines of up to $50,000 for employers who misclassify their workers as "contractors" instead of "employees." Gov. Blunt said lawmakers passed "an extraordinarily strong bill."
