COLUMBIA - A new technology might help universities alert students faster.

Right now the University of Missouri is trying to decide if it will adopt the plan. The new alert system can send out emergency messages in 1/10 of a second, but the University is still exploring its options when it comes to updating its emergency alert system.

The University currently uses a system that sends alerts to e-mails, wired phones and those who have given their cell phone information. But one company wants to speed the process up using e-Fob technology, a small key-chain-sized device that can vibrate and receive text messages.

Purple Tree Technology of Columbia is pioneering the e-Fob technology. Purple Tree Technology CEO Rick Happel said it's faster and safer for university campuses.

"We can tell you what to do, and what to avoid, and what action to take," Happel said. "Whereas the current system, all it does is send out an emergency message, and again it requires you to give them your cell phone information."

The University has not decided yet if it will use the new e-fob technology. While the University's current system is slower than Purple Tree's device, University officials are confident the current campus alert system is capable of alerting students and faculty.
