WASHINGTON (AP) -- A consumer group says Missouri ranks in the top ten states where hogs are raised in huge farming operations. Food and Water Watch has published national maps showing the locations of the factory farms to help make its case that such operations are bad for farmers, the environment and consumers. The farms are known as concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs. The group found that Missouri does not rank high in large chicken or egg farms, despite a heavy concentration of poultry operations in southwest Missouri. Newton County ranks first in CAFOs based on animal units measured by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The group hopes to focus attention on the issue while a new farm bill is being debated in Congress.
