COLUMBIA- Students, faculty and staff can manually help lower energy costs for an entire campus.

MU uses technology to save energy with things like motion detectors to turn off lights in unused rooms.

"In those areas that don't have motion sensors, if you're leaving for the day make sure your lights are turned off. Make sure your window is closed, and make sure you turn off your computer monitor and printer," said Phil Shocklee, the campus facilities associate director.

Amber Seaton, a student at MU does just that.

"I make sure I turn off the TV when I leave. Also if I use the toaster-oven in the morning, I make sure I turn it off as soon as I'm done using it," said Seaton.

Little energy saving reminders are all over campus.

"Walking around campus, I see a lot of different posters that remind students to turn off their lights and appliances before leaving their room to conserve energy and I think they are very helpful," said Seaton.

Campus facilities advertises ways for people to save energy with posters suggesting they dress in layers, or even turn off their computers. Their latest advertisement suggests people stop using automatic doors when entering a building. Automatic doors are easy to use, but waste a lot of energy.

"They're timed to stay open for a person in a wheel chair to get in or get out, and when that door is standing open it's letting the air conditioning out or letting the heat out," said Shocklee.

Some students get the message, but others do not. Campus facilities provides energy to more than 13 million square feet of facilities on MU's campus.
