City Issues Health Alert
ST. LOUIS (AP) - The city of St. Louis is asking residents to help prevent the spread of an infectious disease that could spread in swimming pools this summer. The illness is shigellosis, caused by bacteria called Shigella. Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, cramping, vomiting, fever and headache. Health Director Melba Moore says infected people can spread the illness by contaminating swimming pools and surfaces including lounge chairs and toys. She says no one should swim if they have the illness. She urged pool operators to be vigilant about monitoring levels of chlorine and other disinfectants.
