COLUMBIA - The Show-Me State Games 5th Annual Pumpkin Fun Run encouraged Boone County students to get outside Saturday and live healthy lifestyles.

Children in Kindergarten through 5th grade enjoyed the crisp fall air as they ran the 1 1/2 mile course with their parents and teachers.

Show-Me State Games Marketing Coordinator Emily Lorenze said the event not only promotes fitness but school pride as well.

"The money gives back to schools," she said.

The top three schools in attendance will win $500 for their physical education department.

"We know one school used it for soccer nets that were much needed," Lorenze said. "Another school used it for new basketballs and things for their gym and P.E. classes."

There were no medals or trophies awarded to the runners, so they were free enjoy the race without thinking of it as a competition.

Lorenze said the Pumpkin Fun Run has about 500 participants every year.

"It's really a fun way to have kids involved with their parents and teachers," she said.

Lorenze said she's looking forward to the run next year.

"We have great support from the community as well as MU Children's Hospital," she said. "We hope it will continue for a long time."
