COOPER COUNTY - A family of twelve escaped injury early Monday morning after a fire destroyed their home The Otterville Fire Protection District responded to the fire at approximately 4:30 a.m.and found a two-story home on fire.
Otterville received mutual aid from Pilot Grove, Fortuna, Tipton and Cooper County. Cooper assisted with 1000 gallons of water before being sent home by Otterville Fire. According to incident commander George Sponceler, the home is a total loss. Firefighters left the scene at approximately 8:30 a.m. Sponceler also said seven tankers and two fire engines assisted.
The family did not have a fire alarm in the home. Family members said they were awakened by the smell of smoke. The family saved some items from the basement of their home.
The cause of the fire is not known, though the family believes it was a stove that caught fire. Sponceler said he thinks the house was around 100 years old.
