Advanced Composting Program Begins
COLUMBIA - A program to help you preserve the environment and your wallet starts Tuesday in Columbia.
Become a Master Composter in an advanced composting class from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Capen Park through Thursday.
The program volunteers seek to teach the community about composting organic waste into a soil amendment. As a result, Columbia's waste stream will decrease and landfill space will be lessened.
According to the groups press release, each newly certified Master Composter is asked to volunteer 10 hours within the next year.
Program Coordinator Andrea Shelton said this is the first program of its kind, but the city has had a novice composte program for nearly a decade. Shelton said food waste comprises a tremendous amount of the waste in landfills and she would like to see it go down.
"We live in a great city," Shelton said. "If everyone pitches in it just makes a world of a difference."
Walk ins are welcome to join the program, but organizers ask anyone interested pre register. Contact the city via email for more information or call (573) 874-6271.
