Birth Control Debate
JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri Senate's Small Business, Insurance and Industry Committee endorsed legislation on Tuesday that would give employers the chance to refuse to provide insurance coverage for birth control, abortions and sterilization procedures.
This legislation offers the option for more employers than the federal rule that only focuses on religious-affiliated employers.
The Obama administration wants employers to provide free birth control coverage for employees through their health insurance plans. Religious groups have objected. Since then, the administration said birth control would be provided under insurance companies and religious-affiliated employers would get a choice to provide it or not.
The state measure is now up for vote in the full senate.
