COLUMBIA - A house went up in flames Tuesday, and left the home with extensive damage.

Boone County Fire District responded to the fire around three o'clock this afternoon. Firefighters believe it started near the chimney flue, but the exact cause is still under investigation.

Officials reported one person was in the house when the fire started, but managed to get out safely.

Firefighters were able to salvage the remaining furniture, but said there is still extensive water and smoke damage throughout the house.

"We don't have a damage estimate now, but we have been able to hold it to that end of the house. Once our fire investigation is concluded, we'll try to put a damage loss to it," said Gale Blomenkamp, Battalion Chief of Boone County Fire District.

Blomenkamp said fires like this one are common during the colder months.
