COLUMBIA- Boys and Girls Town, a Great Circle organization campus specializing in the treatment and support services for children with abuse history, evacuated Tuesday afternoon after contractors struck a gas pipe.

Battalion Chief Brad Frazier of the Columbia Fire Department said he didn't know the name of the contracting company, but said the contractors themselves called to report the gas leak a little before noon. He said Ameren Missouri was also dispatched and working on fixing the leak. He also said they only evacuated the Boys and Girls Town as a precaution.

"We actually took measurements in the area and didn't find anything alarming," Fraizer said.

He also said that because of wind direction, nearby residents of the Cottages and Bearfield Meadows housing developments did not need to evacuate.

According to fire department officials, the contractors were working on a site in the Bearfield Meadows subdivision.

Marie McGeehan, the communications director for Great Circle, said the staff and kids were all safe and went to a nearby park until the leak was repaired. She could not disclose the specific park for safety reasons.
