COLUMBIA - There were 839 reported burglaries in Columbia during the 2015 calendar year, according to numbers the Columbia Police Department released Monday.

This is the highest number the city has seen since 2009.

Ronald Williams lives at Log Hill Run and said someone broke into his home last August.

"It was about four o'clock in the morning," Williams said. "They went through all the rooms and they opened my door. I had woken up, so I shined my light over thinking it was one of my roommates and then they just left. I didn't think anything of it so I just went back to sleep."

Williams said the next morning his roommates noticed things were missing from the house.

"They said they were calling the cops," Williams said. "I came home early from work and found out that my PS4 had been stolen, about 20 games, three controllers, one of my roommate's phones that was next to his head had been stolen, his computer, another roommate's computer and two car radios."

Williams said a detective took fingerprints after the burglary, and said the person could have come in through an unlocked backdoor.

"It's kind of a little frightening knowing that something like that can happen," Williams said.

Jennifer Mink lives at The Domain and said her roommate had a similar experience with a burglar in 2013.

"A man was standing in her doorway just kind of watching her, and when he noticed that she she had seen him he ran out," Mink said.

Mink said they reported the incident to CPD.

"It's definitely scary," Mink said. "We definitely take more precaution with locking the doors and locking our bedroom doors."

Although the numbers for burglaries was unusually high for all of last year, the number of burglaries for the 2015-2016 winter break hit a new low.
