JEFFERSON CITY - Ameren Missouri and Westinghouse are discussing expanding the Callaway County nuclear power plant.

Both companies applied for a federal grant together to build five small nuclear reactors throughout the state, starting in Callaway County.

The companies applied for a $452 million dollar grant from the Department of Energy to build the new nuclear reactors.

The president of Ameren Missouri and President of Westinghouse in North America both gave the presentation to the Missouri Public Service Commission for informational purposes.  The presidents discussed how these reactors would be different from nuclear plants like the Fukushima reactor in Japan because most of the reactor would be underground.  Warner Baxter, president of Ameren Missouri said the way these plants are built would prevent widespread disaster if a tornado struck.

The companies applied for the grant in mid-May and will find out the future of the nuclear expansion in September.
