COLUMBIA - The Boone County Fire Protection District responded to a report of a capsized boat floating down the Missouri River near Hartsburg Tuesday night.

A captain with the fire department, Gary Oerly, said the rescue team found the small fishing boat around 9:12 p.m. and no one was in it.

"We see a lot of capsized boats in the river because a lot of fisherman will tie their boats up to the bank during normal height of the river," Oerly said. "Once the river rises, a lot of time they'll work themselves loose and wind up floating down the river, hit a rock, capsize, and somebody reports it as a capsized boat."

Oerly said boaters need to check their boats often to make sure they stay tied up during periods of high water.

Ambulances were also at the river in case anyone was injured.
