SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Chase Headley doubled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, leading Mat Latos and San Diego over the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 Wednesday and ending the Padres' season-worst five-game losing streak.

Latos (2-6) pitched eight strong innings, allowing one run and six hits while striking out seven.

It was 1-all in the Padres eighth when Jason Bartlett reached on a two-out infield single, his third hit of the game. Headley followed with his tiebreaking double and later scored on an infield single by Ryan Ludwick off Chris Carpenter (1-5).
