Columbia city council voting on City Manager\'s pay raise request
COLUMBIA - City Manager Mike Matthes has asked for a pay raise. At the city council meeting Monday, the council will be voting on the raise.
His base salary would increase 10 percent. He currently makes $150,000, so his pay would increase to $165,000.
Columbia has a population of 116,906. According to the International City/County Management Association, the national media base salary for a city manager is around $206,000.
Springfield has 160,660 residents. It pays its city manager a base salary of $201,215.
Independence is just a little larger than Columbia with a population of 121,212. It pays its city manager $209,681.
KOMU 8 News spoke with many residents of Columbia that have mixed opinions on whether Matthes deserves a pay raise.
"It's an executive position. I think that if anything it's a little bit underpaid and that a pay raise for the city manager is warranted," said resident Andrew Blatz.
Another resident who did not want to go on camera stated she doesn't think Matthes deserves a raise. Instead the council members should receive a raise before him.
The city council meeting begins at 7 p.m.
