Columbia College Advances to Conference Title on Saturday
COLUMBIA - Columbia College volleyball is currently ranked No. 3 in the country and has 138 straight wins in conference. However, the Cougars have quite the diverse roster. Five of the eleven players on the roster are not from the United States. The various countries represented are: Canada, Egypt, Brazil, and Serbia. "While it's not the best city ever, but i like it here. I like the school, i like my teammates, i like the students, teachers... Coach" Paula Ferreira, Columbia setter, said.
The team advanced to the conference tournament title game after defeating William Woods University on Thursday. "I think this year we have played many harder games than last year. Our conference is not very strong, but we play different tournaments, we travel to different places, and i think that's what makes us grow during the season" Paula Ferreira, Columbia setter, said.
While the team works together on the court, they also work together off the court to help their teammates learn their new language. "We get to learn the words that are said on the other side of the net, when you may not have understood before" Trinity Ojo, Columbia middle blocker, said. "Everyone is so thrown off by the word 'took' for some reason, it's like a snow hat... I don't know" Jordan Reid, Columbia outside hitter, said.
The Cougars look to bring the trophy home to Columbia Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. as they host Missouri Baptist in the conference tournament title game.
