Columbia Councilmen: Citizens Must Help Police Solve Shootings

COLUMBIA - Police Chief Ken Burton told the city council Monday night that two suspects in the recent flurry of shootings are in custody.

Burton said one adult is in custody who is believed to be a ringleader in the shootings. The suspect is being held on $25,000 bail. A juvenile is also in custody, but police don't know if this suspect played any role.

Burton said seven of the 11 shooting incidents are likely related, but police don't know what their motives were. He said police believe everyone involved in the shootings is a local in their late teens to late 20s.

During his comments to the council, Burton emphasized the need for the community to help police.

"If people aren't talking to us, then our hands are tied," Burton said, adding the best deterrent to crime is intervention on the part of parents.

Burton said anyone with more information about any of the shootings can leave anonymous tips with Crimestoppers at 875-TIPS.
