Columbia Hosts 28th Annual Mid-America Disc Golf Open
COLUMBIA - The 28th annual Mid-America Open Disc Golf Tournament took place at Oakland Park and Indian Hills in Columbia over the weekend. Disc golfers from all over the Midwest gathered in Columbia for three days of competition.
The tournament kicked off with a doubles tournament on Friday, and the singles tournament started on Saturday. The singles open featured four rounds of disc golf and the top four players then continued on to a final 9 tee off on Sunday.
20-year-old Topeka native Nils Nordgren took home first place in the open on Sunday. He came into the day four strokes ahead of second place George Smith of Columbia. Smith and Nordgren both finished with a score of 25 over 9 holes on Sunday, but since Nordgren started four strokes ahead, he held onto the first place title.
Said Nordgren, "This is my third time playing this tournament....and I felt like I played pretty well.....we played four rounds and the final nine....and I felt like I did really well"
Nordgren said he started playing the game when he was seven-years-old and that he plays on a daily basis in his hometown where he lives near a disc-golf course. He said he would play with his brothers and that they now own the company LSDiscs together.
The tournament concluded with an award ceremony presenting trophies and cash prizes to the winners.
