Columbia Police to Book Some Arrests at County Jail

COLUMBIA - The Columbia Police Department said Monday it will begin booking some people it arrests at the Boone County Jail. Captain Brad Nelson said the new procedure will be safer for police officers. He said Columbia Police officers will still book these inmates, but the inmates will be held at the Boone County Jail rather than at the police department.

Columbia Police Department currently has five holding cells in its downtown facility. Nelson said there are often more arrests than cells, and that inmates just wait at the police department until a cell comes open. Housing some inmates at the Boone County Jail will help with this problem. Nelson said this will take effect mid-August.
