Completion of Missouri River Bridge repairs delayed indefinitely

JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri Department of Transportation announced Friday that due to unforeseen complications, the Missouri River Bridge project will no longer be finished by the end of August.

When crews sandblasted the bridge to remove paint, they found more structural damage and rusted rivets.

"We found a lot more of that than we suspected. I don't think we completely suspected we wouldn't find anything," MoDOT district engineer David Silvester said. "There's just no way to know when it's all covered up with paint."

Silvester was not able to predict when the project will be finished, but said it will definitely be after Labor Day.

The additional repairs will cost about $500,000. That additional cost is on top of the $7 million the project originally cost.
