COLUMBIA - The Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment Disorders hosted an autism conference Friday to help parents and professions learn how to care for children with autism.

Attendees came to learn about a variety of topics including bullying, sleeping, and other concerns involving children with autism.

Stephen Kanne, executive director at the center, said that it is rare in Missouri for so many autism specialists to come together and discuss ways to help children with autism.

"They are all able to come and hear all these speakers and presenters who are some of the best in the country, if not the world, really talk about their research and update and improve everybody's ability to understand how to work with this kids," said Kanne.

Autism affects one in 88 children in America. The Thompson Center decided to hold this conference to promote and show how prevalent autism is.

The conference will continue until Saturday evening.
