JEFFERSON CITY - Today marks day one for a state trial court reviewing the state's reassembled congressional district lines. Cole County Circuit Judge Dan Green has until Friday to make a decision regarding the trial.
This year, legislative districts in Missouri are dropping from nine districts to eight because the population growth of the state since the last Census Bureau in 2,000 shows Missouri did not keep up with other states.
With the new plans, districts could be considered divided in a way that gives one political party an advantage which is known as gerrymandering. Two separate lawsuits in the hearing argue district lines are a better way to govern people politically.
Candidates can start filing for elections on February 28.
