COLUMBIA - Construction crews broke ground on the Grindstone Pedway Project Monday. Crews started in the morning by removing trees from the area.

There are two parts to the project. The northern section will include construction of a pedway from Bluffdale Drive to, and along, Moon Valley Road. The southern portion will create another pedway from Ashland Road to Grindstone Nature Area.

The project is funded with GetAbout Columbia funds. The total cost for the project is estimated to be $1.66 million.

According to the city's Bike/Ped Coordinator, Ted Curtis, the project is part of a larger GetAbout Columbia project to connect all of the city for bikers and walkers. Curtis said the idea here is to motivate residents to find alternative forms of transportation.

Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians can expect occasional lane restrictions on Old Highway 63 during construction. Columbia Public Works urges people to use caution in the area.

The pedway is expected to be completed by Fall 2013.
