COLUMBIA - Construction continues on the new home for Boone County Joint Communications and the Office of Emergency Management. The new building, located behind the Sheriff's Department on County Drive is called the Boone County Emergency Center.

Despite a few setbacks including raining in February and delayed shipments Chad Martin, Director of Joint Communications says the $12.8 billion is set for "substantial completion" on June 8.

Martin outlined a number of benefits for both the Boone County Joint Communications and the Office of Emergency Management. The Office of Emergency Management deals with natural and man made disasters. Joint Communications deals with 911 calls. However, the initial stages of dealing with a disaster Joint Communications says start with 911.

Currently, the Office of Emergency Management is located across the street from Joint Communications in downtown Columbia.

The current location for Joint Communications has had negative repercussions for the organization. Joint Communications says it lacks adequate space for training employees and for housing them. As of now, Joint Communications has eight telecommunicators, with the new space they expect to employ as many as 20.
