Controlled burn quickly turns into acre-wide brush fire
COLUMBIA - Firefighters responded to an acre-wide brush fire at 1425 East Oakland Church Road Thursday afternoon.
According to the Boone County Fire District, the owner of the property was doing a controlled burn of a small pile of wood scraps. He went inside the house briefly and when he came back out, he noticed the fence line was on fire.
"The fire spread to about an acre, it did not cause any real property damage, it's just wheat, leaves, dead grasses and some trees," said Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp.
"So overall no big deal, no big damage, but then again the winds are 5 to 10 miles per hour and things are very, very dry right now, so people really need to use caution."
Blomenkamp said the firefighters had the brush fire under control in a matter of minutes, and stayed for about half an hour afterwards to clean up.
