COLUMBIA -- The Columbia College Cougar softball team swept a doubleheader over Missouri Valley College this afternoon. Columbia defeated the Vikings by scores of 1-0 and 9-0 in five innings, improving to 9-9 on the season.

The victories are especially memorable as they are the last games to ever be played on the Cougar Softball Field before it is replaced with a state of the art science center. Since it was built in 1982, the Cougar Softball Field has played home to 18 conference championship teams and 15 National Tournament teams. The Cougars will play the remainder of their home contests at the Antimi Black Field located in Columbia's Cosmopolitan Recreation Area.

Today the Cougars made sure to go out on top, winning the first game after scoring the game's lone run in the bottom of the third inning. Chelsie Crain led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Crain moved to third on Tori Gehlert's single and then scored when the Vikings tried to get Gehlert stealing second. Jordan Crisp (5-4) took the victory on the mound, allowing just one hit and two walks while fanning seven batters.

Columbia exploded for 11 hits in just 26 at-bats to run-rule the Vikings 9-0 in five innings. The Cougars blew the game open in the first inning, scoring four runs off of five hits.
Columbia added one more in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth to collect the win. Freshman Jessica Hardy was two-for-three at the plate with one run scored and three RBIs. Kristen Eiken and Whitni Howell chipped in two doubles each including two runs and an RBI for Eiken and two RBIs for Howell.

Sophomore Taylor Richter (4-2) threw a perfect game, striking out four on her way to the win. The ball only left the infield once when centerfielder Meagan Thurman made the putout in the fourth inning as the Cougars went error free through all five innings.

The Cougars return to American Midwest Conference (AMC) action on Thursday, March 22nd when they travel to Hannibal, Mo. to face the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
