COLUMBIA - The Columbia Police Department has collected information about burglaries that happened over the Thanksgiving holiday.

From November 21, 2014 through December 2, 2014, a total of 34 burglaries occurred during Thanksgiving Break. Last year during break, there were 17 burglaries.

A breakdown of the burglaries shows 28 of them were residential while six of them were commercial.

After the Columbia Police Department checked all 34 burglaries to see if they were happening in a certain area of town, results show they were not concentrated in one certain area of Columbia.

One resident said she feels very unsafe knowing this is happening everywhere.

"Being a student and leaving for holiday breaks worries me because I am afraid that something may happen to our home when we are gone. We make sure to lock everything, but sometimes that can not prevent someone from breaking in," Columbia resident Katy McMillian said.

She hopes neighborhoods will add more security cameras and patrolling to keep watch if these incidents keep happening.

In 2012, there were 24 residential burglaries during Thanksgiving break, and in 2011, there were 40.
