COLUMBIA - The Columbia Police Department warns against leaving cars unattended while warming them up.

The department said leaving cars unlocked and running without the driver is an invitation for car thieves

Bryana Maupin, public information officer for the department, had some tips to keep your vehicle from being stolen:

  • Don't leave your car unattended.
  • If you do leave your car outside, keep a separate set of keys and lock your car doors after starting it.

Drivers in Columbia said they either stay in the car while it's running or locked the car doors.

The department said it didn't have any statistics about cold weather car thefts readily available.
