Department holds public hearing regarding updated standards
JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will hold the first of three public hearings on Monday morning at 11. The hearing is located in the State Board of Education meeting room on the first floor of the Jefferson Building.
The purpose of the meeting is for Missouri citizens to comment on what they think about new standards for four academic subjects.
In June, Governor Jay Nixon signed House Bill 1490 into law. This law provides a timeline for review of the English language arts, social studies, science and mathematics standards that are included in the Missouri Learning Standards.
The exact dates for the two other hearings are undetermined. According to the department, the second hearing will be held within six months of the first hearing, and the third will occur when the final documents are prepared for the State Board of Education.
Beyond the public hearings, there will also be work group sessions in which they will discuss the adjustments even more. The groups in these meetings are made up of members that represent various stakeholders groups. They also will represent every geopgraphic area of the state.
The goal is for the updated standards to be complete by October 1, 2015 and implemented by the 2016-17 school year.
