East Campus Fire Displaces Residents
COLUMBIA - Columbia Fire Fighters responded to a house fire at 1403 Bass Avenue in Columbia just before 3:00 a.m. Saturday after a pedestrian noticed the front porch was on fire. Fire investigators determined that the fire began on the front porch in an upholstered couch. The official cause remains undetermined, but discarded smoking materials or fireworks are possible causes.
Fire investigators also updated the damage estimate to $50,000, including structure and contents.
The house was occupied by four students, all of which had moved in this past week. One of the residents, Ross Durbin, 21, was awoken by a noise just before 3 a.m. Saturday. Durbin said he smelled smoke and then woke up the other three occupants in the house. They exited the home safely and were outside when fire fighters arrived.
Fire investigators located working smoking alarms in the basement of the home, but were unable to locate smoke alarms on the main level.
