EEZ Advisory Board Meets for the Second Time
COLUMBIA - The EEZ Advisory Board met inside City Hall Thursday morning. The seven-person committee is responsible for recommending the exact EEZ boundaries to the Columbia City Council and the Boone County Commission. Board members spent two hours discussing a variety of topics concerning the placement of manufacturers in Columbia and Boone County within the EEZ zones. The board's main area of concern is the poverty levels around different areas of Columbia.
Some community members present expressed concerns about who will actually benefit from EEZ. One member said while she doesn't "fundamentally disagree" with EEZ, she is concerned by the eligibility requirements for businesses to receive tax abatements. As of now, a business only has to create two jobs to become eligible.
The committee agreed to look at both the types of businesses that could be eligible for EEZ, as well as the poverty levels of the zones in question.
