COLUMBIA - A group called "Keep Columbia Free" announced in a media release Friday it plans to start a petition to recall Columbia City Council members who vote in favor of establishing an Enhanced Enterprise Zone (EEZ) advisory board. Keep Columbia Free Vice President Abhi Sivasailam maintained it can carry out this action according to Columbia's city charter

At a city council meeting May 7, the council voted to rescind a resolution that established an EEZ advisory board and a proposed map of EEZ boundaries. The council is set to vote on an ordinance that could establish a new advisory board. Under the new ordinance, Columbia Mayor Bob McDavid would appoint five members, the Columbia School Board would appoint one member and the Boone County Commission would also appoint one member.

Third ward city councilman Gary Kespohl said the possibility of a recall sounds like a threat. Kespohl also said the city council gave citizens the opportunity to submit names of whom they would like to serve on the advisory board, but received no suggestions.

Depending on the outcome of Monday's vote, Sivasailam said Keep Columbia Free will decide whether to move forward with petitioning a recall.
